Pre natal diagnosis being misused for sex determination, female foetus elimination

The lust for male child has been ever growing since time immemorial. But, it is hard to digest that even the educated Indians are killing their unborn daughters craving for a male child. And in this mission of theirs, pre-natal tests have played a significant role. Pre-natal diagnosis was introduced to detect any genetic disorder in the foetus before it is born. Contrarily, these tests have assumed a different role of embryo sex determination, which has thrown axe on many unborn girl children. Rational citizens question today whether pre natal tests for sex determination should be there?

India has shown a declining trend in its sex ratio that stands at 933: 1000 males. It means we have 933 girls every 1000 males. This is a dismal picture for time to come. This trend clearly shows that a time will come when there will be no girls.

Girls are less preferred than boys may be because of the rising social crimes against them. Or it may be because marrying a girl is the biggest headache for the parents. And not only marriage, but also her life in her in laws home remains a question. The thought of hefty dowry demands by the in laws on the girl’s marriage is one of the biggest reason that has forced parents to kill their unborn daughters.

There have been instances when newborn baby girls in some backward parts of the country have been dropped in boiling oil by no one else but her parents. While in few cases, parents leave their newborn daughters on the roadside or orphanage without any one noticing it. And in certain instances, parents strangulate their baby girls, so that they don’t raise their voice again. These are few of the cases where pre-natal sex determination is not available to the parents or because of the diagnosis being expensive cannot be availed by them. Whereas ever since, parents have been able to avail them, the girl birth rate has declined, because the unborn girl foetus is destroyed even before her birth.

The tests were introduced to detect any genetic disorder in the unborn child, but today it is increasingly seen as a sex determination measure that has reinforced the existing anti-girl child status. Further the use of ultra- sonography and scanning facilities is misused to end the female foetuses.

May I ask this question to my educated readers, what wrong has a girl done to her parents? Why should a girl be sacrificed only because she is a girl? Why this lust for a male child? Why do mothers forget that they also belong to the fairer sex? Women have always been at the discriminating end when it comes to boys. But, girls are no less than boys. Today, girls stand on equal notch as a boy, than why girls are being eliminated?

In a country, where a female is revered as a deity like Durga or Lakshmi, it is hard to absorb that the same girl child is being sacrificed for lust of a boy child. It is high time stringent laws be implemented to cut short this rising trend of eliminating an unborn baby girl or killing a female child, else the time is not far when girls will be totally removed from the picture of this country. Remember a son is yours till his wife, a daughter is your daughter for life.

Couldn’t agree with you more, Amit. While the lust for a male child has always been there, the preferable choice now is to have a single male heir, and a boy who has a brother as his sibling is rejected as parents of girls feel that their daughters get only half the property!!!......at least that’s the LATEST TREND here down south!

It is indeed pathetic that very means by which God’s creation is being maintained is cut by it’s very roots. The worst part is even the educated doing this without a tinge of guilt. Don’t they know that they will have to get the ’Son’ of theirs married to a girl, and if everyone keeps killing unborn daughters how do they expect their generation to grow.

Rekha, I do agree with your view and being closer to South, I am aware of the trend you have mentioned. But, being the future of the nation I think, we must be vigilant enough to grant due share to people irrespective of gender. There was one feminist in U.S., Ms Firestone who even argued for throwing away men folk into fire to erase all kinds of discrimination to the women. But, eventually she fell in love with a guy and married him.

We can chnage the attitude of society and even our parents and become the harbinger of a new era where none is discriminated and liberty, equality and justice prevail.
